PLOT SUMMARY

This classic book shares the story of Sylvester who stumbled upon a magic pebble and learns a valuable lesson about material things and the importance of family. This story begins with Sylvester’s luck when finding the magic pebble.  The mood quickly changes when Sylvester accidently turns himself into a rock. As the story continues, we begin to see his challenges with this obstacle and the sadness this brings to his family after loosing their only son.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

Steig’s writing gives readers the feel of a classic fable. From incorporating talking animals to teaching readers a valuable lesson about gratitude and the value of family.  Steig’s provides readers with a realistic feel of grief and anguish when Sylvester’s parents realize their only son is gone.

Steig uses cartoon illustration that incorporate realistic actions that humans experience when presented with a similar situation. His illustrations perfectly depict the characters feelings that help readers understand their despair. Additionally, the character illustrations make it easy for readers to understand the different emotions and challenges that the characters are facing.

This book is great for helping readers understand different themes that center around family.  This can be used to discuss consequences to character actions.

CONNECTIONS

* Gather other books written and Illustrated by William Steig and compare the different characters and themes of the books.  

* Lead a discussion about what gratitude means to them.

* Engage students in a discussion about making choices. Ask students what they would do if they found a magic pebble like Sylvester. Would the make the same choices?

* Take students outside on a nature walk and gather some small rocks. Have students decorate the rocks and place them outside for other to enjoy.
